Packing list

The weather. Jaipur and Delhi will be roughly 23 to 33 degrees and humid, the tail end of the monsoon. Kasauli sits at 1,900 metres, so around 13 to 24 degrees, and the evenings there are properly cool.

Clothes

• A couple of tops with sleeves. Light and breathable. Nice to have for the bazaars and the sightseeing days. More on this in Good to know.
• A light jacket or a sweater. For Kasauli, where you will want it in the evenings.
• Comfortable walking shoes. Amer Fort has a lot of uneven ground. Something you can slip off easily is useful too, since shoes come off at temples.
• Swimwear. The pool at Khas Bagh comes up on most days.

Practical

• Sockets. Your European plug fits. Indian sockets have a safety shutter, so press a pen into the top hole and the two below it will open up.
• One bottle of your favourite spirit. It would be lovely to have it for the bar in Jaipur.
• Mosquito repellent. For the garden evenings and the leopard safari.
• Your documents on your phone. Visa, arrival card, health confirmation. Screens are fine everywhere. If you like a paper backup, make it the visa, since airlines occasionally ask at check-in. See Travel info for all three.

Two small things you might not think of

• Electrolyte sachets (ORS, from any pharmacy). Not because we expect trouble, they are just the one thing that genuinely helps if your stomach has a difficult day, and hardly anyone owns them.
• Something for travel sickness, if you are prone to it. The drive from Delhi to Jaipur is four to five hours, and the road up to Kasauli winds a fair bit.

Beyond that, no need to pack a medicine cabinet. Pharmacies in India are everywhere, inexpensive, and sell most everyday things over the counter.
